The Ecuatorian database , so as other bases builded by member groups of LA RED has been brought up in stages. The Technological University of Quito, began to nourish the database in 1996, in the framework of the original proyect of LA RED-
Disaster inventories in Latin America- and is now being complemented in the framework of the proyect IAI- LA RED -Disaster Risk Management ENSO in Latin America.
The information sources come from two Quito newspapers of national coverage and two from Guayaquil, so as from the Civil Defense for the last EL NIÑO 1997 - 1998.
The events of often happening are in order; floods, fires , slidings, accidents and epidemies. The floods and fires occur mainly in the coastal region of the country which is a plane zone and the slidings mainly in the sierra, which is a mountain region. Geographically , more than 70% of disasters occur in the coast and the rest in the Sierra and Galápagos. In terms of temporal variability, in years- NIÑO -the number of disasters registrated almost triplicates . The rainy months , January to March are the ones registering more disasters, because aproximately 2/3 are events directly triggered or produced by adverse climate conditions. Finally, slidings despite they are not the most often in occurrence are the ones which have caused more deaths and the floods and seisms the ones that have destroyed more houses.
