Description : The colombian database has been builded in stages in the framework of diverse proyects, just like other databases of member groups of LA RED. The last proyect with which the database between 1970 and 2002 has been complemented and refined is the IAI-LA RED proyect “Gestión de riesgos de desastres ENSO en América Latina coordinado por ITDG - Perú” or the Disaster risk management ENSO in Latin América coordinated by ITDG-Peru.

The information sources are diverse. Until 1992 the sources are mainly newspaper libraries and since 1993 they include the reports made by the General Direction for Disaster Prevention and Attention- DGPAD, complemented with information from newspaper archives. Sources are described briefly in what follows:

Government sources:

(1)ING, the Geoscientific, mining-environmental and nuclear information and investigation institute-INGEOMINAS. Period : 1921 to 1988. Based on the inspection of La Patria newspaper from Manizales.

(2)REONAD, National Office for Disaster attention database-ONAD. Period: 1989- 1994 period. Based on reports from the entity.

(3)DNPAD: National Direction for the Attention and Prevention of Disasters. Period : 1995 to 2000. Based on disasters reported to that entity by the regional and local comittees throughout the country.

(0)Newpaper archive sources:
(1)BDOSSO, Database of the Seismological Observatory of the SouthWest -OSSO.
1961-1993 Period. Based on reports from Newspapers such as El País.
(2)“Terremotos en el trópico húmedo” (Earthquakes in the wet tropic), Anndrew Maskrey-Editor, LA RED-ITDG, Colombia, 1996. Period: October 17 and 18 of 1992. Specific information to quantify the effects of seisms that occured in these dates.

(3)El Tiempo and El País Newspapers: specific searches, mainly for seisms, floods and slidings in the period 1914 - 1978.
(4)El Tiempo Newspaper in the periods 1990 - 1999 and 1980-1985. Inspection of disaster reports by this Newspaper, in the framework of the proyect “Gestión de riesgos de desastres ENSO en América Latina OSSO para IAI - LARED ” or “ Disaster risk management ENSO in Latin America OSSO for IAI - LA RED”.
(5)El Tiempo and El País daily Newspapers. Disaster report daily revision in both newspapers in the framework of the proyect “Gestión de riesgos de desastres ENSO en América Latina OSSO para IAI - LARED ” or “ Disaster risk management ENSO in Latin America OSSO for IAI - LA RED”.

During the period 1990-2000 data is distributed over all the natural regions of the country, with greater emphasis in west departments. These are put in relief because of their number of disasters compared to low poblation density, regions of expansion of the agricultural border. Disasters asociated with hidrometeorological and soil use (flood, avenidas torrenciales (torrential floods), gales, slidings) phenomena, add up 87% of the information, including the largest losses according to available information (aprox. 20 thousand million dollars asociated with energy crisis of the Niño years 1991 - 1992), while the greatest number of victims are asociated to seisms, slidings and avenidas torrenciales and houses destroyed with seisms, floods and gales. Houses destroyed by socionatural disasters were of the order of 80.000 and partial losses associated with EL Niño 1991 - 1992, war effects over electric infrastructure between dicember 1999 and march 2000 and revealed corruption only on the state bank, add up almost 40 thousand million dollars, an amount that is close to 15% of the PIB of the whole country in 1999.

Description : The department of geology of EAFIT University (Medellin) has propelled the implementation of DesInventar in the region. As part of his activities the former geology student Camilo polanco developed his degree thesis. "Inventario y Sistematización de los desastres naturales reportados en los municipalities del departamento de Antioquia, exceptuando los municipalities del Valle de Aburrá, entre 1920 y 1999" or “Inventory and sistematization of natural disasters reported in the municipalities of the Antioquia department, except the municipalities of the Valley of Aburrá between 1920 and 1999”. In the framework of the thesis a database was created and it fed upon diverse information sources, based on the national inventory (OSSO-LA RED,2002) that was completed and complemented with a local newpaper's information and with official information from the Autonomous Corporation of Center Antioquia (CORANTIOQUIA), Autonomous Regional corporation of Río Negro (CORNARE) and the Administrative department of Disaster prevention, attention and recovery (DAPARD) among other entities.
